The vocabulary in the selected stories is frequently challenging, but rarely crude. Without a doubt they are horrifying however, they also have important messages about good and evil and human motivation. The goal of this teacher's guide is to provide a selection of King's short stories that are appropriate for classroom use. When introduced as the first readings in a unit on horror and suspense in literature, King's short stories can be excellent springboards to the work of classic novelists. Because students are already familiar with King's work and are intrigued by the genre of horror, they are willing to analyze the stories and use them as a model for their own writing. However, King has many stories that are not only motivational, but worthy of study. His often strong language or the grossness of the horror in some of his stories may have been a barrier. Although most teachers recognize the motivational quality of King's work, many have not considered teaching it in the classroom. ![]() ![]() Because of his popularity with the young, assigning a Stephen King short story to a class will certainly appeal to even the most reluctant readers. High school students who have not read his novels have probably seen films based on them or others for which he has written the screenplays. There is no doubt that Stephen King is an incredibly popular author of horror short stories and novels. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The entire middle part of the story is about the boys practicing proper condom usage in preparation for the real deal, while also accidentally becoming friends with benefits along the way. That’s what kicks off Dave’s practical safe-sex education, with Billy as his teacher. Billy is the first friend he makes there, and the boys have been best friends for a while when Dave notices the basket of free condoms on the counter of a local coffee shop. Dave is a recent transplant in Asheville, which is a much more accepting place than his hometown and that means that he is able to safely explore his sexuality. It’s sweet, and hilarious, and fluffy, and informative, and just cute all around. Read the thing: Read the thing! Start by doing research about non-monogamy. But it's certainly not impossible, and I know many long-term couples who started monogamous before deciding they wanted more. Opening up a monogamous relationship is hard - in fact, I think the jump from monogamous to non-monogamous happens more easily from relationship to relationship, as it's hard to make this transition in tandem with someone else. Many people have asked me how to "become okay with it," or they themselves want to open the sexual boundaries they have with their partner and they don't know how to communicate that. It's easier to approve of the idea of non-monogamy than it is to put it into practice. ![]() ![]() Queer people, in general, are more familiar with non-traditional and non-exclusive romantic setups, but I'm still asked often (via my sex advice blog and elsewhere) how to "open up" a monogamous relationship, usually by LGBTQ+ folks. ![]() Every now and then, when I'm meeting someone new and the topic of my boyfriend comes up, they will say something like, "What kind of guy would let you do that?" or "I could never do that!" or - the worst - "I don't see how that's a real relationship." People love to invalidate open and non-monogamous relationships by saying they're just "glorified friendships" or "cheating by a different name." I've heard all the accusations, and I'm quite fond of the "glorified friendships" one - my partner is, first and foremost, my best friend. ![]() I have been in a happy open relationship for three years. ![]() ![]() ![]() In the 1930s, Matthew "Moose" Flanagan and his family move from Santa Monica to Alcatraz Island when his father takes a new job as an electrician and a guard in the well-known Alcatraz prison. Qureshi deftly weaves together personal narrative and powerful real-life stories with apologetics and historical evidence to examine the case for Islam versus Christianity. “I am not writing this book for either of them.” Instead, he intended for No God but One to reach those interested in discerning the truth about Christianity and Islam. ![]() “While sharing this message, I often come across two kinds of people: Christians who enjoy criticizing Islam, and Muslims who want to argue but do not want to learn,” Qureshi writes.
